Family Nurse Practitioners / Physician Assistants
What is a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)?
A family nurse practitioner (FNP) must be a registered nurse and must be a graduate of a master’s degree in nursing. A master’s degree may take two to three years to complete with a special focus on nursing, leaderships abilities, and many other skills and knowledge important in handling patient’s medical concerns. FNPs handle medical concerns such as patient illnesses, consultations and follow-ups even without the guidance of a medical doctor. He or she works independently with the other members of the medical team and may refer patients to them for further treatment and intervention. A family nurse practitioner may do nursing duties but may also assess, diagnose, make diagnostic recommendations, prescribe medication, make patient follow ups and even collaborate with other medical professionals for appropriate patient care.
What is a Physician Assistant (PA)?
A Physician Assistant, or PA, is a licensed health professional who practices medicine with physician supervision. This does not mean that a physician must always be present, but merely be available for consultation. Physician assistants perform a wide range of medical duties ranging from primary care to highly specialized procedure. A PA will often assist with major surgeries and also provide both pre- and post-operative care.
