What sets us apart?

Patients appreciate the convenient access and personalized care they receive here at BCMH.

Convenience

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. They often don’t realize the multiple appointments and testing that needs to be done, often in a short period of time. Many of our patients tell us they were so grateful to have the option to seek treatment close to home at BCMH. Close access to testing and cancer treatments – the same testing and treatments you can receive in a larger facility – will save time, energy, mileage and stress for you and your caregiver.

Hometown Hospitality

That “small town feel” comes naturally to us, whether we know you or not. That means our nurses and staff actively look for ways to make their patients more comfortable. Our Infusion areas are also designed with patient comfort in mind. Instead of receiving chemotherapy and other treatments in a large room with other oncology patients, as might be the experience in a larger city hospital, you can expect:

  • A private or semi-private room, with seating provided for your caregiver to stay with you during infusion treatments.
  • To be treated individually, based on your needs. Our nurses go out of their way to get to know you by name, to learn what you like, so they can better help you through your treatment plan. Each patient is a person, not a number.
  • Experienced, qualified care. Oncology nurses at BCMH are Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Certified through the Oncology Nursing Society.
  • When you call our department, you can always ask to speak directly to a nurse about any questions you may have. Call: 660-200-7006 and select option 4.
  • Chaplain visits are available during infusion treatments.
  • Our staff notices if patients are struggling and if they can help, they do their best to find a solution. For example, if transportation is an issue they coordinate with our in-house social worker to arrange for transportation.

BCMH may not offer all of the services you may need to fight your battle against cancer (for example, we do not offer radiation treatments), but if you wish to receive any part of your testing, clinic visits and cancer care close to home, our Oncology/Hematology team will help coordinate with your providers to help you define a personalized treatment plan.

The BCMH Tumor Board

In 2021, BCMH formed a Tumor Board to provide a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, bringing together oncology, radiology and pathology specialists to aid in decision-making and improve care coordination. The Tumor Board gives our primary care providers a setting to discuss their patients’ cases with the multidisciplinary team. The goal is to prevent and diagnose cancers, plan treatment and evaluate decisions, as well as to help establish the best treatment plan for our patients without having to travel to facilities far outside of the community.

Hematology is the branch of biology that is concerned with the study of blood, the blood-forming organs, and blood diseases.

Choice of cancer treatment is influenced by several factors, including the specific characteristic of your cancer, your overall condition, and whether the goal of treatment is to cure your cancer, keep your cancer from spreading, or to relieve the symptoms caused by cancer.
