Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, uses radio waves and powerful magnets to create clear and detailed pictures of internal organs and tissues without the use of radiation. This non-invasive procedure generates images that assist the physician in making the best diagnosis possible, sometimes eliminating the need for biopsy or surgery.

How to prepare for a MRI:

  •  You will be asked to remove your jewelry, watch, hairpins, bobby pins, hearing aids, removable dental work and glasses.
  •  Your hair should be free of hairspray or styling gel.
  •  You may be asked not to eat or drink anything prior to your exam depending on the procedure you are having performed.
  •  You may have an IV in your vein if a contrast agent is needed.
  •  If you think you might be pregnant, notify the technologist.
  •  If you are extremely claustrophobic, notify the technologist.
