Health Information Network

A Health Information Network (HIN), also known as a Health Information Exchange (HIE), helps provide a patient’s medical information to all of the health care providers that patient may visit.

You Have Options

Bates County Memorial Hospital partners with Midwest Health Connection (MHC), a health information exchange (HIE) servicing the Midwest region.  MHC has moved to a new consent model to share patient data throughout their exchange network.  Previously a patient had to sign an “Opt In” form to allow his/her data to be shared through the MHC network.  The new model only requires patients to sign an “Opt Out” form if they do not want their data shared through the HIE.  If a patient does not sign an “Opt Out” form, his/her data will be shared through MHC.

What does this mean for me?

If you currently have an Opt In or Opt Out decision on file with MHC, nothing will change.  If you do not currently have either an Opt In or Opt Out decision on file with MHC, your data will be shared via MHC until such time that you may wish to Opt Out.

What are the benefits of sharing my data through the MHC network?

Your health records exist in many places. MHC connects your providers, hospitals and labs to each other. With a more complete picture of your health, your health care team can take better care of you in the doctor’s office, hospital or emergency room. You won’t have to collect records from different providers or remember lab and medication history, it will be available to your care team 24/7.

What if I’m currently Opted Out but want my data shared under the new model?

Under the new model, you can easily change your mind to have your data shared by completing a “Revocation of Opt Out” form.  You can complete the form when you visit your provider or you can find the form on MHC’s website:  https://www.mhc-hie.org/
