Mammography

New Digital Mammography Unit

The use of mammography has greatly enhanced the ability to detect breast cancers at earlier stages and is considered one of the major achievements in medicine.

Bates County Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of full-field digital mammography to the Department of Imaging Services.

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) shows great promise in the fight against breast cancer. FFDM uses computers and specially designed digital detectors to produce images that can be displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor, that are transmitted and stored just like other computer files.

From a patient’s point of view, having a digital mammogram is very much like having a conventional film-screen mammogram. Both film and digital mammography use compression and  x-rays to create clear images of the inside of the breast.

Digital mammography is such a new modality that it is not widely available at this time. BCMH is committed to delivering quality care to our patients, and we have added the LORAD Selenia digital mammography system to our women’s health diagnostic services.

We look forward to being able to provide you with this very valuable health care service.

Frequently asked Questions

Who should have a mammogram?

The American Cancer Society recommends that all women have a baseline screening  mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40 and that beginning at age 40, women have an annual screening mammogram.

How should I prepare for a mammogram?

If you have had mammograms in other facilities, call those facilities in advance and arrange to have your previous mammograms and reports forwarded to Bates County Memorial Hospital. Do not wear deodorant, powder or cream under your arms as it may interfere with the quality of your mammogram.
