Smokin’ in the Electric City

Smokin’ in the Electric City: KMAM-KMOE Interview with Emily Gilkey, BBQ Coordinator

Event Updates for BCCHF / Bates County Fair BBQ Competition

This year at the Bates County Fair, on July 13-16, the Bates County Community Health Foundation (BCCHF) and the Bates County Fair Board are teaming up to present the first annual Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ Competition. The Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned event will take place in Butler, Missouri at the Bates County Fair during fair week. Proceeds from the Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ will be donated to BCCHF to benefit and raise awareness for the Proposed Regional Activity Center.

Currently, 50 teams have signed up and contestants are coming from all over the United States to compete, judge or attend a KCBS judging class.

BBQ Events

Team sign-ups are open! Sign up forms and a detailed list of events are listed below for the Smokin’ in the Electric City BBQ Competition.

The competition features KCBS team events, two classes and several events for the public: a Dessert Competition and a Kids Q.

Kids Q takes place on Friday, July 14 and is open to ages 5-15. Parents are advised that contestants for the Kids Q will be required to attend a cooks meeting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday in the Bingo Building. KCBS rules will apply.

Those entering the Dessert Competition on July 15-16 are requested to make an extra dessert to be used for a Benefit Auction for the Proposed Regional Activity Center. Once you’ve signed up (see the forms below), please contact Emily Gilkey to indicate your commitment to donating a dessert for the auction, and the quantity you plan to submit. Contact Emily at 660-492-0015 or edgilkey@bcmhospital.com.

Judging Classes will be held at the Adrian Frontier Village in the Auxiliary building. Frontier Village is in Adrian, Mo., east of I-49 and Hwy 18. Use the city park entrance and turn right into the Frontier Village entrance.

The Extras

A BBQ food truck will be on site for fair-goers. Watch the Smokin’ in the Electric City Facebook page for details.

The Foundation will also host a Classic Car Show at the Fair on Saturday, July 15, from 3-6 pm. No fees will be collected for the Cruise, but we encourage participants to stay to attend the Benefit Dinner at 6 pm.

A Benefit Dinner on Saturday, July 15 will benefit the Proposed Regional Activity Center. Dinner starts at 6 pm with entertainment from the Overload Band at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the Benefit dinner include dinner and entertainment at the 4H Building.  The meal will be cooked by Rodger Koehn. The BBQ meal includes two meats, baked beans, slaw, cake tea and water for $20/plate. Tickets available at the door. For more information contact Linda Jennings, 660-200-5172.

The Dessert Auction will be held in the Bingo Building on Sunday, July 16 starting at 3:30 pm.

KCBS judges and teams are coming to Butler from near and far. Of special note is one of our own, Dr. James Patterson, a family medicine physician with Family Care Clinics, who will help judge the Rib Burn on Friday night. He and his wife recently became certified KCBS judges and are excited to participate in an event that benefits their own community.

Triple Crown

Smokin’ in the Electric City is part one of a “Triple Crown Event” for the State of Missouri. Each event benefits local fundraisers in their communities.

Teams competing in these KCBS-sanctioned events will receive more points toward attending the American Royal World Series of Barbecue.  The championship will be determined by taking each team’s highest three total scores from the three events. The advantage would be to cook all three events to win the overall Triple Crown Championship.

The second event for the Triple Crown will be Smokin’ on the Osage in Osceola Mo., taking place on July 21-23. Learn more.

The third and Final event will be Boo-B-Que held in Lees Summit, Mo., October 29-31, and triple crown winners will be announced at this event. Learn more.
