Gastroenterology involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and biliary system. Some of the more common problems include peptic ulcer disease, heartburn and reflux, colon cancer/polyps, gallstones, and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Swallowing difficulties, indigestion, heartburn, ulcer disease, abdominal pain and hepatitis are some of the GI problems treated. Gastroenterologists work closely with primary care physicians and other special consultants to provide the best medical care and recommendations for every patient.
