Updates for Proposed Regional Activity Center

What is the Proposed Regional Activity Center?

In 2022, thanks to a local investor, the Foundation was given a sizable donation to be used for establishing a community center in Butler. A steering committee was formed to explore the possibilities and the project was temporarily named the Proposed Regional Activity Center.

In the past year, the steering committee for the Proposed Regional Activity Center has accomplished a number of their goals and made some key decisions. After monthly meetings, site visits, discussions with community members and completion of a preliminary community survey, the steering committee has decided to join forces with the YMCA and has located a promising option for a temporary “storefront” location.

The committee has determined that a partnership with the Osage Prairie YMCA in Nevada would be definitely help in this effort to reach its goals and obtain resources to meet the needs of the area for an activity center, while also sharing dues, some staffing, resources and expertise.

A feasibility study with the Osage Prairie Y and a YMCA affiliate company has been conducted to better align the Y’s program and facility membership amenities to meet evolving community needs and potential community partners and interests.

A possible storefront building has been located to begin YMCA programs for children and adults. These activities require funding, so the steering committee is also seeking grants, investors and fundraising options.

One such fundraiser in the works is a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned barbeque contest cosponsored by the Bates County Community Health Foundation and the Bates County Fair Board. The first annual Smokin in the Electric City BBQ Competition will take place during the Bates County fair on July 13-16, with categories for youth and adults. Sponsors are needed. Proceeds from the Smokin’ in the Electric City portion of the Triple Crown contest will benefit the foundation for the purposes of supporting efforts for the Proposed Regional Activity Center.  For more information about participating in or sponsoring this event, contact Emily Gilkey at Gilkey, 660-492-0015, edgilkey@bcmhospital.com.

The PRAC steering committee is available to attend local clubs or organizations to speak on its project goals and goals. Members are: Larry Burch, Chance Hedrick, Jeremy Jones, David Hilgenberg, Mike Taranto, Chris White, Greg Weaver and Linda L. Jennings.

The steering committee is also seeking people who are willing to get involved by joining a fundraising committee, or another sub-committee. If you would like to help, or to learn more, send an email to info@bcmhospital.com
